A stroll through Oldenburg’s old town should not be missing on your personal tour. Look forward to a huge pedestrian area with many sights, historical wittnesses of 5 centuries and of course todays shopping malls. Museums and interesting culture institutions are in easy reach by feet. There is no lack of street cafés, bistros and restaurants where you will be able to relax.
The Cultural Summer Programme
The cultural summer has been Oldenburgs’ cultural trademark for decades. Most of the times open airs with known international and national artists are presented. Many acts, classic music, rock and pop are performed at the castles’ place.
The "Horst-Janssen-Museum"
Not only as an architectural appeal the house is an hommage to Horst Janssen as a person, graphic artist, author and to his genius works. In the main gallery of the Horst-Janssen-Museum on the ground floor, a space of approx. 500 square metres is devoted to three or four temporary exhibitions a year on the work of Horst Janssen and artists with which he had an affinity. Examples of these are Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya, Jacques Callot, Max Klinger, Jean Dubuffet and Egon Schiele.
The aquarium in the "Landesmuseum of Nature and Humans" offers you a fascinating glimpse into the underwater world of the river Hunte. State of the art technology supplies the plants and animals with fresh or salt water, because in the natural world too the composition of the river water is constantly changing. From mirror carp to loach, you can experience the local fauna first hand.
In the Landesmuseum, the focus is on the landscapes of North-West Germany, such as moorland, the "Geest" coastal sandy moorland, coast and marsh. The natural and cultural history of the region is brought to life and made comprehensible with graphic exhibitions – from the ice age to the modern fauna of the waters around Oldenburg.
