Celle – More than a Framework-City

Picture: Half-timbered house in Celle 700 years city history is alive in Celle. The closed historic town centre contains more than 500 half timbered houses from the 16th 17th and 18th century. Incomparable sights are present from the times Celle was ducal residence: The duke’s castle which’s building began in 1292, the castle’s chapel from 1470 with an unique equipment from times before reformation started and the oldest still running baroque theatre of Germany.

Celle is the city in which tradition and open-mindedness for new ideas established an own culture. The harmonic of generously formed snug inner courts, places and facades side by side show as time ran by and is still very fascinating.

The cafés are very homely, the wine cellars cosy and the restaurants offer international and regional specialties; Life is pulsating in the harmony of a traditional framework city. There is a lot to notice and experience in the city with its 72.000 inhabitants.

Celle Stallion Parade

The most beautiful stallions are put through their paces in a three hour programme on the parade square, which is surrounded by historic buildings and ancient trees. All the stallions of the Niedersachsen State Stud (currently numbering around 200) are presented, either led by hand, ridden or pulling historic carriages.

Lucky horseshoe on Stechbahn square

Picture: Horseshoe in front of the Löwenapotheke The generous, modern square by the Stadtkirche was previously known as the “Steckelbahn”and in mediaeval times was used as to stage knights’ tournaments. Duke Otto the Magnanimous is said to have been fatally wounded during a tournament here in 1471. A horseshoe set into the cobbles in front of what is now the Löwenapotheke serves as a reminder of this event. Touching the horseshoe is supposed to bring luck.
