Illuminated cities in a winter wonderland

Picture: Christmas market in Braunschweig Sitting in a beach chair and drinking mulled wine – an experience you will only find in Niedersachsen! Where you find the unique Christmas Forest in Goslar or a 11-metre high Christmas Pyramid, all wishes will surely come true. The aroma of cinnamon blueberry soup wafts through the illuminated half-timbered side streets and mixes with the smell of roasted almonds.

Every year around the Advent period the Autostadt is transformed into a new winter world, always with a giant Christmas tree and ice show on a glittering skating rink.

Stroll around the cathedral and the Dankwarderode Fort to the Braunschweig Christmas market, which has a tradition of 300 years from the days of Henry the Lion.

The wonderful bright half-timbered facades shine in festive splendour during the Advent period. A 10 metre tall Christmas tree decorated with lights attracts both young and old from afar.

Engelkemarkt in Emden
Framed by the solemnly lit museum ships, the East Frisian sea harbour town is turned into a Christmas jamboree around the old inland port and the Stadtgarten. Apart from a lot of sweet smelling delicacies at the Engelkemarkt, you will also find plenty of maritime presents on the festively decorated wooden stands.

Even the "Gänseliesl", the emblem of the town, gets into the festive spirit when she sees the romantic Christmas markets around the medieval Town Hall.

Goslar
At the old Emperor’s town of Goslar visitors experience a pure Christmas atmosphere. In the centre of town, the Christmas Forest, which is unique in Germany with its 40 illuminated spruces, the pleasantly smelling forest ground and comfortable mulled wine huts beneath the trees, invites you to stay. Directly next door on the historical market place, the Christmas market offers lovingly designed wooden huts and a wide assortment of treats and high-quality handicrafts.

Hameln
The unique buildings of the Weser Renaissance illuminate in a warm glow during the festive period. The great attraction is the 11-metre tall Christmas pyramid.

The small, cosy Christmas market on the church square in the halftimbered town of Hann. Münden is completely devoted to the legendary travelling surgeon Doctor Eisenbart.

In Hannover there are three Christmas markets: around the Market Church, on the Lister Meile and the special Christmas gift is the Finnish Christmas Market in the Old Town.

The Winter-Zoo also has a real Christmas feel to it: With a toboggan run, an ice-skating rink and a Christmas market all around Meyers Hof, the Animal Park offers pure winter fun.

The splendour of the Hildesheim Christmas market on the historic market square shines in front of the impressive façade of the wonderfully preserved half timbered Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butchers’ Guild Hall).

The traditional Christmas market in Jever is surrounded by cosy timber-framed houses on the Old Market.

Lüneburg
The splendid Baroque façade of the town hall radiates a Christmas glow and serves as the festive setting for the Lüneburg Christmas market. A jewel of the Advent period is the historic Christ market in the old town, where farmers and craftsmen stroll around in the costumes of the 16th century.

Rinteln
Experience pre-Christmas time in the historical old town scenery of Rinteln: Shiny kid’s eyes marvel at the two large turned Christmas figures from the Erzgebirge and the sparkling lights of the carousels. Already from far you will see the impressive Christmas tree that forms the centre of the market.

Stade
The scenery of the old town of Stade coins the Christmas market, making it very special since it takes place on the Horse Market and Stade’s “front room”, the Fish Market.

Oldenburg
Framed by the St. Lamberti Church, the historic town hall and the Oldenburg Castle make the festive mood of the Oldenburg Christmas market particularly contemplative.

Osnabrück
A six metre high nutcracker and the biggest Christmas music box in the world attract visitors to the Christmas market in Osnabrück. The Christmas markets around the Johannis Church and in front of the Cathedral are connected by the popular little railway.

Uelzen
Uelzen, the heath town with the “Hundertwasser Station” turns into a Christmas fairy-tale world in Advent time. In the centre you will find the town’s Old Town Hall – its façade is made to look like an Advent calendar.

Wilhelmshaven
Christmas at the seaside is best experienced with a mug of mulled wine in a beach chair or with a stroll through the booth alleys decorated with maritime symbols, ropes, boats and more. A large Christmas tree will show you the way to the market in the town centre already from far. The EisArena invites you to have fun on skates.

Wolfenbüttel
The magical fairytale trail and the daily Advent calendar attract mainly families with children to the cosy atmosphere of the historic town market.
