Gifhorn, known as City of Mills, is located in the south of Lüneburg Heath. The Open-Air Mill Museum with its 16 mills from different countries is unique in Europe. The historic old town offers modern shops behind beautiful half-timbered facades and looks back on a history of more than 800 years. In the Renaissance castle of the Guelph dukes the culture history of the Südheide is presented over three floors. Two popular destinations are the Gifhorn Heath, the swimming paradise Tankumsee and the Otter-Centre in Hankensbüttel.
