Town and Cityscapes - Wolfenbüttel

Former Guelph residence and vibrant half-timbered town

Picture: Wolfenbüttel - little Venice Wolfenbüttel and its 56,000 inhabitants will welcome you with a historic ambience, but also with the comforts of a cosmopolitan, friendly
small city. Let yourself be captivated by our Old Town with over 600 half-timbered houses, the important churches, the representative
castle district, the mighty half-timbered Town Hall, “Little Venice,” the world-famous Duke August Library and the Lessinghaus: our old town is a work of art in its own right, like no other in Niedersachsen!

Picture: Wolfenbüttel - town hall at the historical market square Defining for our city and its current appearance were the Guelphs. Over four centuries (from 1350 to 1752) Wolfenbüttel was residence of the culture and art-loving Dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg. Famous personalities like Lessing, Leibniz, Praetorius, Wilhelm Busch and Casanova are inextricably linked with Wolfenbüttel and have left behind their marks.
