Town and Cityscapes - Hildesheim

A city full of tales and traditions

Picture: Hildesheim - Bäcker- and Knochenhaueramtshaus The historic market square with the famous Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butchers’ Guild Hall) forms the vibrant centre of Hildesheim. Marvel at the ensemble of half-timbered houses and sit back and watch the world go by in one of the countless cafés. Even the scholar Wilhelm von Humboldt was so fond of this place that he described it as the “the most beautiful market place in the world.” Nowadays it is the best starting point for visitors to begin their journey into the past of Hildesheim.

Unique UNESCO-World Heritage

Picture: Hildesheim - UNESCO-World Heritage St. Michaelis (c) Deichmann Two important examples of architecture of the city belong to the UNESCO-World Heritage with the Cathedral and the St. Michael‘s Church. Both churches are excellent examples of Romanesque architecture and symbolise the creativeness of Bishop Bernward. The large number of unusual decorative pieces, e.g. the monumental bronze casting of the Bernward door and the Column of Christ inside the Cathedral, plus the richly decorated wooden ceiling in St. Michael‘s is extremely impressive. Steeped in legend is the 1000-year old rose bush, the emblem of Hildesheim, which according to the legend is closely connected with the development of diocese and city.
