Oldenburger Münsterland

Come Out to the Country!

Picture: Pedalos and sailboats on Lake Dümmer Discover the joy of living in the Oldenburger Münsterland, a grown cutural region which is embossed by its century old relationship to the metropolis Münster and to Oldenburg. Ride, cycle or paddle through the districts Cloppenburg and Vechta, spend your vacations on a farm or visit the open air museum in Cloppenburg. On more that 4.000 kilometers well labeled cycling ways five recreation areas invite you to a lot different things: from the fenland in the north, over wide bog- and flat-landscapes and the only dam of northern Germany to the "Dammer Berge" in the south.

The Oldenburger Münsterland is embossed by extensive water areas. The "Barßeler Tief" in the north, the "Hasetal" in the west and the "Thülsfelder Talsperre" in the east such as the "Dümmer See" in the south form the terminals of the rivers and the lakes. Water sportsmen and lovers of the maritime atmosphere will favour it. You can switch from bicycle to canoe or the other way around just as you wish. Whether canoe, sailboat, motorboat or kickboat: the recreation areas of the Oldenburger Münsterland have a lot to offer.

Niedersachsen Open-Air Museum in Cloppenburg

Picture: Open-air museum for half-timbered houses The Cloppenburg museum village is the oldest museum village in Germany, and has over 50 country buildings on display dating from the last 500 years. The day-to-day history of Niedersachsen brought back to life: every Sunday, specialist tours are offered on a wide range of themes, with participation programmes for the kids, all of which can be enjoyed without having to register in advance. From baking bread in old stone ovens to dying cloth the way it used to be done hundreds of years ago: this gives children a good initial impression of many aspects of daily life as it was lived in past times, while parents can take part in the guided tours.

The "Three Lakes" Circular Cycle Route

Picture: Cyclists on the Three Lakes Circular Cycle Route The "3 lakes route" links up the most important waters in the North-West - the Zwischenahner Sea, the Thülsfelder reservoir and Lake Dümmer. Unspoilt natural countryside with moorland, heathland, woods, river and pond landscapes offer nature lovers a feast for the eyes along the route's around 219 kilometer. Parts of other long-distance cycle paths are included in the route – it also goes through neighbouring Ammerland and the beautiful Wildeshauser Geest nature park. The accommodation is as individual as the daily stages, and with a range of accommodation from youth hostels to hotels on all three lakes, you're sure to find something to suit. The Verbund Oldenburger Münsterland offers an all-in cycle tour with luggage transfer.

Horse Breeding and Equestrian Sports

Picture: Galopping Oldenburg horse Horse breeding and equestrian sports have a long and established tradition in the Oldenburger Münsterland. Although the Oldenburg horse used to be popular practically only as a carriage horse, the picture today is completely different. Oldenburg horses lead in all disciplines and are found among the best in international sports. Successful show-jumpers have made a great impression on the international equestrian scene with the horses bred here in the region. The great names of international equestrian sports are all at home here, such as Alwin and Paul Schockemöhle, Nicole Uphoff, or Lisa Wilcock. In the spring and autumn, top-class auctions are held in Vechta, where auctioneers get top prices for top horses.
