The Euro was introduced as the official currency in Germany and most other European Union States on January 1st 2002. One Euro is made up of 100 cents. Stamps are available at all post offices, at vending machines outside post offices and in some newsagents or tobacco stores. The postage costs for a letter are 0,55 Euro, postcard 0,45 Euro, "Päckchen" (up to 2 kg) 4,10 Euro, "Postpaket" (up to 20 kg) 6,70 Euro. Opening hoursMost shops open from Mondays to Saturdays between 7am and 10am. Some bakeries and newsagents open at 6am. In town centres most shops do not close for lunch. Monday through Friday most shops stay open until 6pm or 8pm. On Saturdays shops are allowed to stay open until 8pm. On Sunday most shops are closed. One exception is bakeries. Population7.9 million people live in Niedersachsen, in an area of 47,000 square kilometres. Niedersachsen is the second largest German state in terms of area and the fourth largest in terms of population. Puncture repair service for car driversThe German motoring organisation ADAC puncture repair service number is 01802 22 22 22. Further information at www.adac.de. TelephoneThe standard German international dialling codes are valid (Austria 0043, Great Britain 0044, France 0033, The Netherlands 0031, Italy 0039, Poland 0048). To call Germany, use the dialling code 0049. The mobile telephone network generally covers all parts of the country and uses the GSM900 and GSM1800 standards.. TippingThere are no fixed rules for tipping. Tips of about 5 - 10 % are usually given, depending on the type and scope of the service. Traffic rulesAll passengers must put on seat belts. Children under the age of 12 must sit in a child seat unless they are taller than 1.5 m. The speed limit within town and city boundaries is 50 km/h. Many residential areas and areas near schools and kindergarten have a speed limit of 30 km/h. Cars are only allowed to drive at walking pace in especially signposted “Spielstraßen” (play streets). Outside city limits, on country roads, the limit is usually 80 km/h. If there are no signs restricting speed on motorways then drivers are advised to drive at the recommended speed of 130 km/h. In Germany the legal limit of blood alcohol is 0.5 per mill.
