Events & Highlights
The christmas markets in Niedersachsen are a unique experience for visitors of all ages and some of them markets date back to medieval times. But there are much more different festivals and celebrations taking place here all year round. Large and small events amaze both young and old. Brilliant fireworks, aromatic delicacies and the pleasure to celebrate together is prevailing.

Braunschweig Classix Festival
Dates 2010: 17th January, 8th May, 24th May, 15th June, 23rd September
A festival of classical music in Braunschweig and the region as far as Hanover and Magdeburg. The Braunschweig Classix Festival offers a contrasting programme for ears, eyes and palates in four subject blocks, for seven months long.
Walpurgis - Festival of the witches
Date: 30th April
The Walpurgis night is celebrated in almost all villages in the Harz on 30th April. In several towns even more than 20.000 guests are visiting the celebration. Witches with pointed noses and hats, with twig brooms between their legs and wearing a colourful scarf around their necks hang in the streets.
International Händel Festival
Dates: from 14th May to 25th May
The 2009 Göttingen International Händel Festival has been presented unter the motto "Orpheus Britannicus - Händel in England". Many other concerts and open-air-events invite guests for a visit of Göttingen.
Herrenhausen Festival Weeks
Dates: various dates from 4th May to 27th June
The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen are transformed into a huge festival in the summer during the Herrenhausen Festival Weeks. Those who are passionate about Baroque music should attend one of the operas that take place at the Galerie.
Emden Matjes Days
28th to 30th of May
Traditional ships from Germany and abroad anchor up at the inland port and Ratsdelft and together with lots of Shanty singers provide a maritime flair. And just like last year the Emden running community will be taking part in the popular Matjes run through the town centre.
Schützenfest (Shooting Festival)
2nd to 11th of July
During the „Schützenfest“ you will get to know the lively side of Hannover. Each year you will experience all the hustle and bustle of a popular funfair as well as partying at the biggest Marksmen‘s Fair in the world. Over 5.000 marksmen from clubs from all over Germany will participate in the showpiece “Grand Parade of the Marksmen”.
International firework competition in Hanover
Dates:15th May, 29th May, 21st August, 4th September, 18th September
The International Firework Competition in Hannover is annually held against the fabulous backdrop of the city's Herrenhausen Gardens. Year after year in the magnificent Baroque garden, five different competing teams regularly set new standards in the art of pyrotechnics.
Pied Piper musical “Rats”
Dates: 02nd May to 12th September
This humorous interpretation of the Pied Piper’s tale with jokes and zest was established in 2000. Without paying entry fee, you can experience the 40 minute musical, every Sunday at 12:00 am on the terrace of the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House). In 2009 the whole city is celebrating the 725 anniversary of the Pied Piper.
Duhner Wattrennen – Tidelands race in Duhnen
Dates: 18th July
The tidelands race in Duhnen on the ocean bed in front of the North Sea baths Duhnen must be the only one of its kind in the world. Since 1902, trotter and gallop races are held here. It is an incredible sight to see these powerful horses galloping over the tidelands.
Weekend on the Jade
Dates: 1st to 4th of July
Big harbour party with water, land and air activities. The events with the navy will be the main focus of the celebrations around the large harbour. On the open air stages and in the fun tents, over 80 music groups will entertain the public. Plus: open ship on the countless steam boats, museum and sailing ships, the dragon boat race, the original witch village and the closing fireworks.
Maschsee Lake Festival
Dates: 28th July to 15th August
The Maschseefest attracts over two million people a year to one of the biggest summer festivals in the North of Germany. Shaded avenues of trees and a palm-lined boulevard along the lake give the marathon nearly three week long party an incomparable maritime atmosphere.
Celler Hengstparade (Stallion Parade)
Dates: 25th/26th September, 02nd/3rd October
The annual Celle Stallion Parade is one of the most outstanding occasions in the international series of events. Hanoverian stallions are put through their paces. The three hour programme shows the horses being led by hand, ridden or pulling historic carriages. On arrival day is a cosy chat and information session. A typical Niedersachsen evening meal will round off a weekend that you’ll enjoy telling your friends about.
Lüneburg Master Salters' Festival (Sülfmeistertage)
Dates: 1st to 3rd of October
The revival of Lüneburg's historically most important and biggest festival - the "Master Salters' Festival", also known as the "Kopefest". Three wild days of music , dance, theatre, crazy contests and a grand festival parade fill the big festival programme.
