Südheide Nature Park

Picture: Sheeps in Lünebuerger Heide © TourismusMarketing Niedersachsen GmbH

The Südheide (southern heath) nature park covers the area of the South of the Lüneburger Heide a few miles north of Celle. The countryside is the home of numerous endangered animal and plant species. Otters, cranes, black storks, freshwater pearl mussels and the brook lamprey can still be found here.

The nature park is accessible via well marked foot and cycle paths. The park is excellent for riding, with a network of bridleways and firm sandy ground. Or you can travel through the heathland in more stately fashion in a carriage, especially around Hermannsburg. You can also watch the huge herds of Heidschnucke moorland sheep and from Hausselberg you can enjoy a particularly fine view of the wooded landscapes of the southern heath. There are old imposing heathland farms in many villages, but particularly in Müden, Eversen, Oldendorf and Marwede.
