Lüneburger Heide Nature Park

Picture: Nature park Lüneburger Heide

The nature park is a popular destination for visitors, particularly in August and September, when the heath is in full deep pink to light violet bloom. A beautiful sight which has inspired many a poet to pen a romantic poem or two.

The heath landscape is no less impressive today. You can enjoy this unique landscape on around 700 kilometres of footpaths and 300 kilometres of bridleways. The marked paths are accessible on foot, by bike, on horseback or in a carriage. To protect the landscape, plants and animals, with the exception of two roads, no cars are allowed in the entire area. At the centre of the park is the Wilseder Berg, which at 169.2 m above sea level is the highest elevation in the North-West German lowland plain. From the hillside there is a wonderful panoramic view of the heathland.

Do you know how heathland is created? Since the bronze age, man has been clearing, grazing and burning the woodland. The heath develops on the dry sandy soil. This artificial landscape is nowadays maintained by the grazing of the Heidschnucke moorland sheep. Try some culinary delicacies such as Heidegeist, a liquor, or roast Heidschnucke in the park's friendly restaurants.
