International Nature Park Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen
Before its organised colonisation and cultivation in the 19th Century, Bourtanger Moor was one of the largest continuous moors in Northern Europe. This area recently became the latest nature park in Niedersachsen. Thanks to many natural, cultural and historical links with the neighbouring Netherlands, the cross-border, international Nature Park Bourtanger Moor - Bargerveen was created here in the Summer of 2006. Almost 4,000 hectares of peat moor land serve to protect nature and offer a habitat to a wide variety of plants and animals. Nature lovers and holidaymakers can enjoy colourful scenery along rambling paths totalling 17 kilometres in length: Ochre yellow and heather hues illuminate the sand and meadows, bluish-green and brown colours the moors and former peat digs. In between the green of the cattle pastures and the gold of wheat fields, small communities and villages are scattered across the countryside. Sightseeing in the Nature Park Bourtanger Moor
