Niedersachsen's National Parks
Niedersachsen has some real natural treasures – the two most important areas, the Harz mountains and the Wadden Sea, are protected national parks. Seals, shrimps, crabs and shellfish in the Wadden Sea national park, the lynx, fox, black woodpecker, wren, wild boar and red deer in the Harz national park. The animals are happy in the Niedersachsen's two national parks and so are the visitors. It really is a unique feeling to experience nature so close up. A national park serves first and foremost for the preservation of the rich flora and fauna. Man must have as little impact as possible and let nature be nature.
The contrast between the two national parks is a particular charming feature of Niedersachsen. On the one hand there's the Wadden Sea, with its salt marshes, dunes, beaches and sand banks. There are breeding, feeding and resting grounds for various birds, including some very rare birds. It's the home of fish, shrimps, crabs, the famous lugworm, and last but not least seals. It's a completely different story in the Harz national park. From the southern edge of the mountains through the highlands to the northern rim, the landscape is characterised by high and transitory zones, the rock biotope, many rivers and streams and a large portion of woodland.
