The Harz national park protects and develops a biodiverse mountainous landscape of woodland, moors, rivers and streams. The area was given special conservation status in 1994, because of its particularly valuable habitats, home to rare plants and animals. "Let nature be nature“ is the motto of this mountain wilderness, which is rich in legend. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Hochharz national park borders directly onto the Harz national park.
The Harz lynx project is a unique project which has been in progress since 1999. In a large reintroduction compound, lynxes are prepared for reintroduction into the wild. To help the animals become wild, contact with man is reduced to a minimum. As an exception, lynxes will be kept for the duration of the project in one enclosure at the Rabenklippe restaurant near Bad Harzburg, to give the visitor the opportunity to see these beautiful but shy animals in a natural setting.
National park rangers lead individual and informative walks (2 to 3 hours in length) and advise visitors trekking in the open country. In the national park houses and education centres, you can find out all about the mountain wilderness of the national park.
