She is the creator of the world-famous Nanas and Hannover’s first and so far only honorary citizen: Nicki de Saint Phalle, died 21st May 2002 in San Diego. She had been a friend of Hannover for over 30 years – visitors meet this great artist’s name and her works wherever they go. A total must-see for Niki fans is the grotto in the Herrenhäuser Gärten (Herrenhausen gardens). The grotto in the Großer Garten (grand garden) was built in 1676. It originally contained three rooms, which were decorated with shells, crystals, glass and minerals. These served as a magical, cool retreat for hot summer days.
In the 18th century, everything was removed and the building was subsequently used as a storage room for a long time. Niki de Saint Phalle, the creator of the world-famous Nanas and Hannover’s first and so far only honorary citizen, realised her promise shortly before her death. She turned the over 325-year-old grotto into a “unique and distinctive work of art”. Since its opening in May 2003, this location magically attracts Niki fans from all over the world. Its fascinating magical world made of mirror and glass mosaics as well as multi-coloured figurines made of polyester.
The two outer rooms, featuring mirrors and blue stained glass, symbolise the contrasts of night and day, life and cosmos. Niki de Saint Phalle died a year before the completion of this impressive grotto in the Großer Garten. The grotto in Herrenhausen hence became her last big project.
