The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen
A spectacular experience and events set against a backcloth of green
Renowned as one of the most beautiful garden parks in Europe the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen are a prime example of a traditional horticultural heritage and culture whose roots date back over more than 300 years. As an almost unchanged example of a Baroque garden style the Great Garden impresses guests with its formal layout, magnificent parterre, cascading fountains and the colourful grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle.
Once the summer residence of the Royal House of Hanover, the gardens convey a royal atmosphere to this very day. For garden lovers there is a lot to discover in the Berggarten. Around 11,000 different plants flourish in this botanical garden. Visitors are also impressed by the magnificent display of over 800 orchids and other tropical plants in the botanical greenhouses. You can experience a fascinating underwater world and over 6,000 tropical plants in the adjoining Sea Life Aquarium. You will also enjoy a visit to the neighbouring Georgengarten, which is modelled on an idyllic English-style landscape garden, as well as a visit to the Wilhelm-Busch Museum.
From May the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen are transformed into a wonderful green ceremonial setting. Adorned with 60,000 summer flowers and 1000 exotic pot plants the park attracts guests to a variety of different events including concerts of the Herrenhausen Festival Weeks, the International Firework Competition, the performing arts festival “Kleines Fest im Großen Garten” or musicals in the historic garden theatre. A wonderful atmosphere is also created with the evening illuminations in the Great Garden. Open all year round from 9:00 am.
