UNESCO World Heritage in Goslar

The ore mine Rammelsberg

Picture: UNESCO World Heritage in Goslar: the ore mine Rammelsberg Green forests, clear water and clean air are attributes, which define the Harz mountains today and which attract many relaxation-seekers to the heights of these most Northern highlands. The Harz was once one of the leading mining regions in Europe. Today it is not only marked by its harsh beauty, but also by its “monument density”, unrivalled in Europe. The ore mine Rammelsberg near Goslar is the only mine in the world, which has been in constant use for over 1000 years. The pit, which was first put to use in the 10th century, dominated the economic and cultural development. Goslar has the former silver mine to thank for its rise to an imperial Palatinate in the High Middle Ages.

The Rammelsberg ceased operating in 1988. Since then it has become one of the biggest and most inventive museums in Germany. The development of the work culture is made visible by the unusual combination of being an authentic workplace and a museum. Together with the medieval old city centre of Goslar, it was entered into the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 1992.

The old timbered city centre of Goslar

Picture: Aerial view on the old timbered city centre of Goslar Cloisters, churches, monasteries and 1800 timbered buildings convinced UNESCO to award the title
“world heritage site” to the enchanting old city centre for its unique beauty and also to the Rammelsberg, on which the city’s wealth is based. The Mönchehaus (monk house) Museum is one of the most renowned museums of modern art worldwide. Every year, the city awards the internationally popular “Kaiserring”. By the way, Christo became a member of this elite in 1987, after he wrapped a pit lorry here.
Just like the ore mine Rammelsberg, the imperial city of Goslar also looks back on a history of over 1000 years. It was probably finding the first vein of silver, that made the Saxonian and Salic emperors decide to build their biggest and safest Palatinate facilities here. At the same time, the city became a centre of Christian faith. Goslar was also called “Nordic Rome”. 47 churches and chapels with their numerous spirals dominate the unique silhouette of the city. And the spirals of five big parish churches, which one can see from the raised imperial Palatinate, are still an impressive sight to behold.
