To mark the 35th meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in June 2011, the Fagus Factory in Alfeld built by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer from 1911 onwards was officially crowned a World Heritage Site.
The factory is generally considered to be an example of early modern architecture. The architect succeeded in giving a medium-sized factory a completely unusual appearance, far removed from what was considered traditional at that time. A century later and the timeless, listed building is still operational: continuing to produce Fagus shoe lasts, and now also GreCon measuring and fire protection systems. The factory is open to visitors and available for hire for meetings and conferences.
Fagus Factory centenary in Alfeld
Another anniversary: the Fagus Factory is also celebrating its centenary in 2011. The factory, which became a listed building back in 1946, underwent extensive renovation last year, which attracted many an interested visitor the world over. A particular highlight for visitors is the Fagus Gropius Exhibition (since the EXPO 2000).
Opening times: Monday to Friday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
