The Sprengel Museum in Hanover is regarded as one of the most important art galleries of the 20th century. The original basis of the gallery was the collection of Dr. Bernhard Sprengel, who had placed particular emphasis on German expressionism and French modernism. Over the last 20 years, the collection has been expanded to include the primary strands of contemporary art and in 1994 a photography and media section was added. As well as this comprehensive permanent collection, each year around 25 temporary exhibitions are held. The museum also hosts various symposia and lecture series. A particular draw for visitors are the exhibits by honorary citizen of Hanover Niki de Saint Phalle. Since the middle of 2002 works by the French artist are shown permanently in the museum under the title "La Fête. The Niki de Saint Phalle endowment".

Museum and school

Another of the museum's strengths lies in cooperative ventures with schools. The museum can be enjoyed as a creative learning space. Educational programmes are available for school classes of all types and ages. The generous space of the forum with seminar room, printing workshop and work areas makes it possible to carry out practical experimentation or to put into practice artistic procedures and ideas.
