Niedersachsen Landesmuseum


Picture: Lower Saxony State Museum With its four distinct collections "old European art“, "natural history“, "prehistory" and "folklore", the Landesmuseum in Hannover is the largest and most visited museum in Niedersachsen.

The art collection includes works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Albrecht Dürer, as well as works by many other artists. The collections particular foci are German art from the middle ages to the renaissance, 14th to 18th century Italian painting, 17th century Dutch painting and 19th and early 20th century European art

The big attractions in the natural history section are models of dinosaurs and the aquarium ("Vivarium“) with more than 2000 native and exotic fish, amphibians and reptiles. Visitors are also introduced to the variety of habitats in Niedersachsen, such as the Harz mountains, heathland, and the North Sea.

The museum's prehistory section reflects on more than 500,000 years of cultural history. You can get insights into the economy and technology, the history of settlement, burial practices and ideas of the afterlife from the early stone age to the middle ages. The mummified bodies from the moors of Niedersachsen are a particular highlight.

The folklore section includes exhibits from all over the world. The lost advanced cultures of Peru and Mexico are a central theme, but the North American Indians, African tribes and the inhabitants of China, Japan and Indonesia are also represented. Find out about medicine, agriculture, nutrition and natural philosophy in these diverse cultures!
