Wihelmstein Island Fortress & Landestrost Castle

As well as the two famous Guelph castles in the Tourismus Region of Hannover, the Celle Castle and the Marienburg in Pattensen, there are many other small, lovingly maintained castles located in stunning countryside.

Wilhelmstein island fortress

Earl Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe arranged the construction of the Wilhelmstein island fortress between 1761 and 1767 on a man-made island on the Lake Steinhude. It was a star-shaped entrenchment with four bastions and a citadel. This is where the first underwater boat in the world was stationed, known as the “Steinhuder Hecht” it operated very successfully in the Lake Steinhude.

Landestrost Castle

The Landestrost Castle in Neustadt am Rübenberge was built in the period from 1573 to 1584 by Duke Erich II. of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as a representative residential building in the style of the Weser Renaissance. In its vault it houses the Duprès sparkling wine cellar and on the first floor, a small peat museum.
