Hitzacker – a Little Town With a Lot of Charm

The mediaeval town on the Elbe has many faces. Picturesque old alleys with half-timbered houses and cobblestones are great for a stroll. The lovely river landscape on the rivers Elbe and Jeetzel is a unique paradise for nature and has been part of the UNESCO “Elbtalaue” biosphere reserve since 1997.

Since then, this idyllic spot has been at the heart of the Lower Saxon Elbtalaue (Elbe valley river meadows). The town’s varied cultural programme ensures that there’s always something new. Markets, readings, gallery previews and of course the Hitzacker music week, famous well beyond the confines of the region, are held regularly in the spa town on the German half-timbered architecture route. Bird-lovers will find plenty to enjoy, walking, riding or cycling along the Elbe dikes.

The area around Hitzacker is a real paradise for birds – it is home to over 150 different species. Many migratory birds rest here on their way south. Everywhere there are high water marks – flooding has been a part of life here at the mouth of the river Jeetzel for centuries. When the floods, such as the great flood of 2002, arrive, the alleys turn into canals and footbridges from house to house are hurriedly put in place. The Elbe riverscape can also be explored in the “customs boat”. Varied and interesting tours can be taken along the what was the border zone between the two Germanys before reunification.
