The Port of Emden
The port of Emden is endearing and hospitable, traditional and open, entertaining and sporty, natural and green. The economic and cultural heart of East Friesia nails its colours to the mast - few towns have seen so many new and forward-looking initiatives or developed such cultural self-confidence over the last few years. Once a year, the inhabitants of and visitors to the town celebrate the Emden “Matjes” (young herring) days. Herring fishing has been going on in Emden for more than 450 years – in spring, the fish have the highest fat content and the delicate pink, fresh “Matjes” are eaten well salted. Many large sailing boats visit the harbour for the Matjes days, turning it into a real maritime experience!
Art, history and culture lovers will find just as much to do in the harbour town as sportsmen and women. A visit to the art gallery, a gift to his hometown from Henri Nannen, is a must-see. Testaments to Emden’s great past are on display in the East Friesian state Landesmuseum in the Rathaus on the Delft. Or how about a whiff of sea-faring romance on board a museum lightship? It can happen in Emden - even a meeting with German comedy star Otto and his Ottiphants, who romp about the "Otto-Huus" in their hundreds.
