Dragon boat races

Picture: War cries and frantic drumming echo across the Maschsee in Hanover. The oars cut through the water to the rhythm of the drums, driving the colourful boats with their dragons’ heads at full speed. It’s Whitsun and once more time for the “International Dragon Boat Races”. Numerous casual dragon boat crews and teams from the German Dragon Boat Association will compete for victory and honour.

Picture: Dragon boat racing is a Chinese tradition - after being exiled from the imperial court the revolutionary poet and land reformer Qu Yuan threw himself into a small river in despair. Fishermen and farmers raced to their boats to rescue the poet and reformer. The splash of the oars and the constant drumming are meant to keep away large fish. Since then, every year the search for this martyr goes on in symbolic form with the traditional dragon boat races.
