Beach sailing, surfing and – indoor surfing!

Borkum, the westernmost and with 36 km² the largest of the Ostfriesland Islands, will increase the heart rates of all water and beach sport fans. Due to the nearby Gulf Stream the island enjoys a high sea climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. The 26 kilometres long sandy beach, the dunes and the sea form a wonderful backdrop for an active holiday revolving around wet element.

Beach sailing is one of the popular sporting activities on Borkum. You will silently swish along the white beach at up to 70 kph, driven by nothing but wind power – you can’t get much better than this. Whether professional training or “just a taster,” the Borkum beach sailing school offers the whole spectrum of this “windy” sport.

Right on the northern beach of the island is the Borkum surf station. The hook-shaped sandbank in front of the beach provides good cover from the North Sea surf, so that there are optimum teaching conditions for surfers in moderate winds. A moderate surf builds up in a westerly wind of approx. 5 Beaufort., which depending on the tides is also suitable for surfing newcomers. A taster course takes place several times a week. The surf station on Borkum has also developed the skill system, which enables a fast and realistic estimation of the of participants’ abilities.

No waves in the North Sea? The adventure pool “Erlebnisbad Gezeitenland ~Water und Wellness” not only has a sauna with an unparallel sea view of the popular “FlowRider®.” At the first and only indoor surf facility in Northern Germany the waves of the North Sea are simulated with a pressure of 200 kilowatt. A whole lot of fun for indoor surfers.
