Wittekindsweg

Picture: Marking of the Wittekind hiking trail Length: 95 kilometres, 5 days

The Wittekindsweg is one of the most popular footpaths in North Germany. Along its 95 kilometres, which follow the wooded ridge of the Wiehen hills, there is a richness of beautiful countryside and loads of impressive views. From Osnabruck to Porta Westfalica, there are also plenty of cultural sites of interest on the trail of the Saxon Duke, Wittekind. Even today the remains of his fortifications, known as the Wittekind castles, can be seen at many spots in the Wiehen hills and they bear witness to the conflicts at the end of the 8th century AD.
