The 156 kilometre long Hermannsweg is considered one of the most beautiful elevated footpaths in Germany and runs along the ridge of the Teutoburger forest. Starting in Rheine, it runs, at an altitude of between 100 and 400 metres to Horn - Bad Meinberg, where it ends 441 metres above sea level at the Lippischen Velmerstot rock formation. The footpath is named after Hermann dem Cherusker, who destroyed the Roman army in the battle of the Teutoburger forest in 9 AD. The Hermannsdenkmal stands as a monument to this event and is one of the many interesting sites and attractions, along with the Dörenther cliffs, the Extern stones and the Adlerwarte Berlebeck, which line the route. Geological curiosities and the numerous historic village centres and other sites of interest make this tour a real natural and cultural experience.
