Experience the green expanse in the Emsland
Cycle for 2000 kilometres, as far as the Netherlands
The landscape of the Emsland is made for cycling: rambling natural spaces, age-old culture landscape, historic treasures and future oriented technology – the region presents itself as rich in contrast and varied. With little traffic and close to nature, the routes lead through the idyllic landscape, almost without slopes.
The Emsland route (270 km)
The popular circuit stretches from Rheine to Papenburg with the well-known Meyer dockyard. The tradition-steeped tour takes you through lush green meadows, mysterious moors and the idyllic forests of the “Hümmling” hills. You will be surprised as you come across romantic mills, mystic gravestones or stately homes like the Baroque Clemenswerth castle in Sögel – a journey through time in the Emsland.
Ems cycle route (375 km) and cycling tour Dortmund-Ems canal (350 km)
Cycling by the water? No problem! The Ems cycle route follows the blue Band of the Ems and takes the cyclists from the source near Hövelhof through the Münsterland into the green expanse of the Emsland and on to the North Sea. Along the route cyclists will come across traditional towns like Lingen and Meppen with their picturesque old towns. Maritime fl air surrounds the cities of Haren (Ems) and Papenburg. The Dortmund-Ems canal is a life vein and trade route at the same time. Shipping traffic, harbours and locks make the tour exciting, from the Pott to the water’s edge.
Heathland cycle route (177 km)
The Heathland cycle route in the North of the Emsland connects the Ems and Weser rivers with one another. 4000 year old gravestones, countless museums and the Geestlandschaft, which was defined by the Ice Age, accompany the cyclists to the Hanseatic city of Bremen.
United-Countries tour
Two circuits (180 and 220 km) lead the cyclists to the Netherlands. Wild moors, prolonged canal systems and pretty villages, like the star-shaped Bourtange fortress, characterise the region. Pioneers developed the moors, smugglers kept the little border traffic going. The Pioneer and Smokkel routes follow their trail, and cyclists can discover two cultures and a unique hospitality.
Tip: The Emsland Tourist Office has worked out individual arrangements for all routes – from a short weekend biking break to a complete week’s cycling tour.
